The 55th annual Nordic Fest gets underway this week in Decorah. If you haven't yet been, it's an awesome trip to make to connect with terrific people, enjoy tasty food, all in a non-commercial atmosphere dedicated the celebrating the deep Norwegian heritage in Decorah, of which Vesterheim plays an integral role, just as it has since the first Nordic Fest in 1967. The above photo of Gary D. Svenson was taken August 3, 1983 when he and his fellow fair board members also participated in a youth event on the track - the pedal power tractor pull. The Winneshiek County Fair took place the first week in August, often just after Decorah's Nordic Fest for many years.  Everyone's friend Helen Basler told Gary this was her favorite photo of him because it captured his joy, his spirit, and his ability to jump right in and do whatever it takes for the success of the community activities he loved serving.  Now scheduled for mid-July, the Winneshiek County Fair gets underway in Decorah next week. Are you planning to make your way there?
