For DiAnn's 60th birthday surprise 18 years ago today, the last letter in her memory book was from her husband Gary, pictured above. It reads:

Now do you see why I've been asking you about how old you are this year? Dawn and I have been working on this for a little while. 

Guess I would have to start from the beginning with our trip to the State Fair to see Mr. Charley Pride with Irv and Kathy Schau. Do you remember that XXX bar we accidentally went into when we were trying to give Irv and Kathy a moment alone?

The trip we took to Nashville was also something to remember, especially seeing the Grand Ole Opry - a very long trip in a short time.

The help you gave me, standing by my side at the Winneshiek County Fair was amazing. I could not have done it without your help and the help of both Dawn and Darin. It was a true family effort by everyone in our family. This was true with all of our projects - Nordic Fest, Nordic Dancers and more. We have lots of wonderful memories raising our family and being in Decorah together. Thank you!

The loss of Grandma was a loss for everyone in the family and the snowstorm will not be forgotten. The loss of Marlene was the hardest thing that I have ever had to give you notice of. It was not only the loss of your sister, but your best friend it was hard for all of us.

All the trouble that I have given you with my ankle, ankle replacement, the first stroke and even the health problems of recent days, sure was something for you to go through. You would have every reason to say, "I do not want any part of this."

I just want to thank you for all that you have done for me. I also thank God for all that you have done for me. I love you! Happy Birthday!

    Thank you for sharing the letters written for your mom's 60th Birthday scrapbook. So very special. Really enjoyed reading them. Cant believe it has been 18 years. In some ways it seems like yesterday. What a fun surprise gathering that was for your mom and all for those who attended.

Enjoying the Pacific Ocean

After DiAnn's passing last June, the family sent a funeral program to Gary's beloved cousins, Joanne and Jerry Knighton in Seattle. They received the loveliest note in return: Thank you so much for sending the program for your mom's services - so thoughtful of you. My favorite memory of DiAnn was when she and Gary were out here for a visit and we drove to the ocean - she could hardly wait to wade into the water! Glad I got a picture of that. Birthday Greetings from Aunt Rita

Among the treasures in DiAnn's 60th birthday book created in 2003 is a handwritten letter from her aunt, Rita Wenthold, along with a picture of the stargazer lilies from DiAnn's own front garden.  Rita's letter reads: Happy Birthday DiAnn, We have had many good times together. It was so nice to go with you to Cedar Rapids to visit relatives. When Dorothy and I went to Decorah to visit Florence we also stopped at your house and had a good game of cards. I remember your wedding. It was great.
