Cherished hospitality and quality time

 

"We’ll always remember the gracious hospitality of Gary and DiAnn!

All the times we were down to check on our farm & then able to visit with Gary & DiAnn - we never left Decorah (on our drive back to Minneapolis) with a hungry stomach & our hearts were also full with great stories & memories!

In recent years, we also loved visiting with DiAnn at Mabe’s Pizza, which was also a tradition when meeting with Mary Jane & Jim Suchan (up from Cedar Rapids) around Christmas.

Thank you so much to the entire Svenson family for their hospitality & cherished time together all of these years!

The Original St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian 50 Years Ago

  50 years ago tomorrow, Gary and DiAnn's wedding was in the previous St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian, DiAnn's life long faith home. That church included the now uncommon ornate altars shown in these two pictures from their wedding.  Unfortunately, torrential rains in 1993 and tornadic proportion winds in the spring of 1994 fractured the supporting timbers in the church's gothic attic, separating the east wall to the extent that repair was not cost effective. DiAnn's mother Bertha's funeral Mass would turn out to be the 2nd to last Mass held in the church in January 1997.  Click on the photos for a larger look at the church interiors, as well as Gary & DIAnn from from their wedding day, October 21, 1972, and the other anniversary posts.

DiAnn's Recipe for Thanksgiving Dressing

  Happy Thanksgiving! As the holiday approaches next week, shared is a scan in DiAnn's distinctive handwriting on how she approached from-scratch dressing at Thanksgiving, which was regularly at the Decorah Fire Station after she married Gary given his shift schedule.  The recipe reads: Dressing To shorten cooking time, cut in small pieces the gizzard and heart. To improve the flavor, add the neck, back, etc., but that's unnecessary. Remove from bone and dice small for dressing. Add only onion, salt, pepper  & bread broken up by hand. Use the broth from cooking the meat, plus some of the juice from the roaster for the moistening part, leaving it quite juicy.  Put it in a larger container or roaster than you think is needed as it bubbles during baking. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Beautiful moments from October 21, 1972

  Click on each image for a closer look.  In today's images from Gary & DiAnn's wedding 50 years, ago, we first see DiAnn and her dear friend and personal attendant Kathy Schau. Kathy and her husband Irv joined Gary and DiAnn on their first date, which was to see the Charley Pride (DiAnn's favorite) concert at the 1971 Iowa State Fair.  The second images shows off the beautiful wedding flowers and DiAnn's "something blue." The third images is of matron of honor Betty Busta, DiAnn and bridesmaid Linda Pankow. All images show case the two shades of pink theme to Gary & DiAnn's wedding.
